Looking at buying older 4040

I am new to farming and I am looking at buying my first tractor-a 1973 JD 4040 from a nearby auction this weekend.

I went and drove it and noticed 2 things. 1. After it had been run up and down the road about a mile there was "smoke" coming out of an exhaust port on the bottom left side of the tractor. I am not sure what that is? Is that normal?

2) My brother noticed that the right hand side set of duals (both wheel-rim mounted dual) had a very slight "wiggle" when I went down the road. I did not notice it nor any hop but what could cause that short of a bent axle-which I would have thought I would have noticed.

This is a Quad Range tractor with 6900 hours and apprears relatively clean with good Tin and a nice cab, weights, and quick attach on the 3pt. I am thinking about bidding up to about 9000 or so..does that seem about right to you experts?

The smoke you are seeing is blow-by. This is compression gasses that are by passing the pistons and rings. This could be an indication that the engine needs overhauling. This will also cause hard starting in cold weather. The wobble that you are seeing is most likely caused by the inside rim not being bolted up exactly true to the hub. A little bit of wobble will not cause any problems. If the tractor is indeed a 1973 it is a 4030 and 9k is probably a bit high even if it has cab and air. If it is a 4040 then 9k would be a fair price considering that it may need an overhaul.

I think the "exhaust port" you're talking about might be the crankcase vent, and the smoke is blowby-a little bit is normal, a lot would indicate an engine in need of an overhaul. I don't know where you're located but here in Illinois $9000 wouldn't get you much of a 4040. If it is a 4030 you might get it for that price.

Make sure that blow-by smoke isn't masking steam. That can be one of the first signs of electraulisis. Dirt in the cooling system "sandblast's" holes, usually in the bottom of the cylinder sleeves, that allow coolant into the crankcase. The fix is new pistons and sleeves. (The prevention is a "kit" from Deere that is a coolant filtration system) All of the 40 series tractors are proned to problems.

I was at a sale saturday that had a 4040 with
1750 original hours,it also had a 148 loader.
The old man had quit farming probably 20 years
ago,and kept the 4040 around to push snow. The
tractor brought $20750,the loader brought $3000,
the front weights brought $35 each, and the weight
bracket brought $50. A jocky bought it all.

4040 wasn't around yet at 1973. maybe you mean 4030?
i don't know what you mean exhaust on the bottom left side (maybe a downdraft exhaust, but not on 4030) most rims on row crop jd's are clamped to the wheel disk and rim runout can be adjusted.
