I have a 41? B hand start that runs good once you get it started. Seems like someone answered this before but I can't remember what they wrote. When I try starting it it will sometimes try to go backwards when it hits. Someone told me to either advance or retard the timing but I can't remember which one it is. Could someone refrech my memory?

Thanks!

Jeff, seeing as it kicks back while starting, your ign timing is more than likely are too far advanced while cranking.
~You didn't say if mag or distributor equipped & what make mag or dist is on it so this will have to cover the "how to" only.
~To just set the starting timing [mags only] all you have to do turn the flywheel in the starting direction & listen, when the timing is correct the mag will SNAP just as the [L/H impulse] writing on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the tractor trans case [that mark is at 3 o'clock directly behind the flywheel & even in height with the center of the crankshaft]. ~If the mag snaps before the L/H impulse mark lines up [probably your problem] just loosen the mag retaining bolts & move the top of the mag forward slightly to retard the timing, then turn the flywheel in the starting direction & listen again. It might take a couple of tries but won’t take long to get it timed correctly. If it doesn’t always snap in the same place suspect a rusted, worn, or sticking impulse cup on the back of the mag.
~If you have a distributor, just take the L/H spark plug out & leave it attached to the plug wire & lay it on the engine block, then turn the ignition switch on & turn the flywheel in the starting direction. When the starting timing is correct the L/H plug will spark as the L/H impulse writing on the flywheel lines up with the case mark [in same place as the mag system].
~If you don’t want to go through all of the above, just mark the mag to governor [so you know where you started], then loosen the mag retaining bolts & rotate the top of the mag FORWARD a little, then try to start it. If it still kicks back rotate the top a little more forward until it quits kicking.
~It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to check & set the points gap first [.015” on high part of the points cam for most mags, but check the specs on your mag]….Closed up points due to rubbing block wear will advance the timing & could be causing your problem..

Jeff, if the flywhel tends to kick backwards when you try n start it, the initial static start timing is set too fast (too far advanced) and needs to be retarted slightly. To do that, loosen the mags mountign bolts and rotate it CW.

The start timign can be set by removing the plugs so she rotates easily and then bring the left hand cylinder up to TDC on its compression power stroke (you can use a wire etc to determine TDC). At that position (left piston at TDC), the Left Hand Impulse timing mark on the flywheel should be in the 3 o clock position in line with a flat mark on the tractors side and the mag should just snap to fire the (top terminal on many Wico caps if installed as original but regardless, the first leading terminal) left hand cylinder. If she fires too soon before the LHI flywheel mark reaches the flat line at 3 o clock and kicks back, retard her (rotate mag CW) but if she fires after the flat 3 0 clock mark, advance her (rotate mag CCW). Thats primarily for the non gear reducer driven Wico type C and XH series mags (fire at TDC on BOTH power and exhaust) which if set as original where the left cylinder fires first out the top terminal, and the right 180 degrees rotation later, Even if the mag happended to be 180 out on a Wico C & XH, the wires can be reversed to make her run even if it ends up the bottom terminal firing the left cylinder. On the gear reduced drive mags, they have to be right with the left cylinder firign first at its power stroke TDC and the right firign at its TDC power stroke which is 180 later.

Good Luck n God Bless
