Well I had my head checked and it has a slight crack around the valve seat. Has anybody had any luck welding one if a good shop did it? Guy at the shop found it magnifluxing but claims its ok under pressure. I question this becuase it was full of antifreeze and then it was all in my clinders after setting over this summer. Or should I just save up and buy one that would be guaranteed at a yard that I bought parts from for years. thanks as always for the advice

Jerry

In my neck of the woods here in Ohio we have a company named Columbus Colweld. There business is repairing cast blocks and cranks. They would have your head fixed in nothing flat. Make sure you find a shop that does castings often if not full time. Check with the local racers and see where they have thier work done.

Thanks Dave I had heard of it before and I go to Ohio State so I guess I should give them a try.

If you had a lot of antifreeze in the cylinder, I would check the push rod tubes. Originaly they were steel and would rust through. John Deere went to brass later on. If it has the original tubes they should be replaced with new brass ones.
A good machine shop should have no trouble repairing the cylinder head.

I would venture to say that that crack is not the problem causing coolant into your cylinders. More than likely a head gasket sealing situation. Is the seat itself cracked or areas around it? Some cracks in valve seats and close surrounding areas can be simply repaired by cutting out the old seat and installing a new one. Thats assumming the crack hasnt extended to far into the face or extensivley into the valve port. The fact that it doesnt leak under pressure means that it cant be too bad.
