I have a 4010 diesel that sounds real smooth at idle but when I open it up to about 1200rpms or more it really sounds like it is missing and smokes white. (doesnt smoke white at idle) I also noticed that it has abunch of black lookin thick stuff that run down the outside of the muffler and also leaking the same stuff out the manifold. I have heard if you dont work the tractor hard enough that they will do that. But this tractor gets worked fairley hard each day.The injectors were looked at 3 months ago, The injection pump was replaced about 4 years ago. If you guys have any ideas on what the problem could be. I would appreiate it. Thanks

could be water and could be fuel, colors of smoke are open to interpretation, regardless, is it using coolant? if not, fill the coolant to the top of the radiator and run it cold and see if bubbles start popping up, it would indicate compression leaking into the cooling system, otherwise, if coolant is being lost and no pressure is indicated in the cooling system, could be a leak in a water passage that is not under pressure. if it is fuel, that would explain the black goo -- you can get an electronic thermometer, rev it to 1200, and check each cylinder at the exhaust manifold to see if one has a large differential in temperature, ifso, then swap injectors and see if it moves to the other hole, if it does, replace injector, if it doesn't it is the pump, but there are other tests for that if needed, place bottles on all injectors, crank engine and check amount of fuel in each, if they are not extremely close to each other -- pump-be-gone...
