Looking for recommendations in a rollover plow configuration that is compatable with a JD 730D? It will turn dirt on a farm off Pulpit Rock Road in northern New York. Rocks are big players in the history of farming in the area!

Thanks,
Gene

hey , the local JD dealer over here in VT just had a set of 2 bottom rollovers traded in, have not been used in quite some time , but you could get them pretty cheap I believe

The need for front weight isn't totally due to being able to lift the plow. With a 3 point plow it tends to lift the front when you get to really working. The wide front is nice to make it easier to stay in the furrow without wearing out the brakes. In my part of the country roll overs are all that are used, except the new reversible plows. JD 825, 835 and 845 were the thing in their day but most have gone off the the salvage yard by now. Not sure what the 820 is, maybe the one that had a cyclinder on each side to roll over instead of the later round mechanism. I tried to find a good JD 2 bottom rollover, found some but not for sale. I finally found an IH at an auction that is in good shape. I think it depends upon what part of the country you live in. I know guys from soem areas that hardly used a 3 point plow at all.

GOOD GRIEFF>>>>More brain cells have kicked in. Back in the late 1950's I cowboyed at a ranch in NW Wyoming and the ranch had ditch irrigation for hay fields off the Graybull river. Now the brain cells that have kicked in tell me that even though the U of Wisc was promotioning rollovers for contour strips, they where really for dead flat ditch irrigated land so to keep the dead and back furrows out of the land for better irrigation. But I don't recall ever seening them in the part of Wyoming I was in. Those pictures of the plows on the dead flat got me to thinking about that.

I have a 730 with single wheel and a JD 2 bottom Model 825 plow. I get along just fine with it. The 730 is light on the front end, but not to the point where I use my 720 with front end weights. I would not attempt to use a 3 bottom on my 730 without placing the wide front and weights on it. I have been plowing in an old irrigation donut with this plow and have not had any problems. I know of two other plows in this area and purchased mine about 4 years ago for less than $400.00.

Good luck in finding one. In all my life I have only ever seen one that was a JD and that was at a tractor show. The one that you want is a JD 820-A as they had safety standards. (for your rocks) (The 820 had stiff standards). If the brain cells kick in ag engineering class at college (the 1960's, here boys,) they were promoted for working contour strips on hill sides. We live in the hills with contour strips and I don't know anyone who ever owned one. Which is kind of backwards thinking as they were so heavy even with a wide front end and a full set of front end weights they would be dangerious on hills. I looked in one of my old text books (FARM MACHINERY and EQUIPMENT by Harris Pearson Smith, A.E. Professor Texas Ag Experiment Station, printed 1955,) rollover plows rate 4 lines in the text, but there are pictuers of a John Deere pull type plow behind a "A" and it is called a "Treadle type two way plow." It was realy two, two bottom plow side by side with one of the two bottems in the ground at a time. A picture of a IH pull type plow that rolled over end to end instead of rotating 180 degrees. A roll over plow that rotated 180 degrees by Allis Chalmers mounted on a WD-45. And a picture of a Ferguson roll over mounted on a Ford 8N. Interesting that there was lack of text, but with 4 pictures,,,,,and all of the pictures show them working in the dead flat land.

PS: The picture of the JD 820-A in my MODERN FARMING with John Deere Quality Farm Equipment 1958 edition also shows the 810-A plowing dead flat land.

Mike

Thanks for the info. The land I'm working with is fairly flat also, but sometime in the past some pretty ugly ditches got started. Just looking at things I can do to minimize any further erosion during my stewardship.

Believe I recently saw a JD 2 bottom rollover for sale on the internet for around $700. Now I can't find it again to check the model number. Maybe it has sold.

Gene

An model 820, 820 A or 825 is probably your best choice. I own a model 820 A and have used it on my 1958 620 with wide front end without front frame weights. It was a tad light in the front. I have since added the three piece front frame weights and that is now very stable. My 820 A roll -over is a 2 bottom roll-over. I don't think my 620 would handle a 3 bottom roll-over. These roll-over plows are really heavy. A 720/730 probably would with front frame weights.

In "John Deere Tractors and Equipment, V1" there is a picture of a 730 tricycle with a 3 bottom rollover plow. Per the caption it's a model 825. The tractor has a stack of weights on the front, looks to be 3 on the front plus the two side weights. Plowing in level ground. Vol 2 of the same book shows a 4020 with a 4 bottom model F835A. This tractor is a wide front and must have about 12 weights stacked on the front. I would think you could convert either of these plows down to a two bottom which would probably be a much better load hanging on the back of a 730.
