I just bought a JD wagon and am trying to figure out the model and its capacity. It has six bolt hubs with a JD on the caps. Also leaf springs that look original.

I am thinking its a 963? Does anybody know the capacity?

I belive the 943 was a 5-lug bolt pattern. I think you have a wagon with the long hubs that have JD on them and that should be an early 953. The later 953 and 963 wagons were almost indistinguishable, both having the short hubs. I have only noticed the springs on the early 953 wagons.

The 943 was an "Economy model for lighter loads and lower speeds". No rating given. The 953 "Standard model for highway-speed hauling on automotive tires. Rating 4 ton. The 963 "Heavy duty, useing implement tires." Rating 5 tons. The 963 had optional 4-wheel hydaulic brakes. The picture of the 963 shows the leaf springs on the bolster. (Being pulled by a pick-up with a liquid N tank mounted on the wagon.) All wagons were availible with a JOHN DEERE 94 bushel flair box. Box pictured on a 953 full of ear corn pulled by a 520 without 3 PT. It doesn't say if the leaf springs were availible on the 953.

I purchased a John Deere wagon with the JD logo on hub caps and bolster springs.I installed 12-A combine spoke wheels on it made a real show wagon,in detailing wagon out I purchased a book called John Deere Buggies and Wagons and this wagon was listed as a 952 so when I installed decals I put 952,I'm not running into any more info on the 952 is this correct, the book stated that 952 was first built in 1936? thanks Garland

I have an earlier brochure (A-510-50-2) showing A's, B's and M, MT (both of the last two with rear wheel weights). Brakes (2 or 4 wheel)available only on the 953, but springs available for either. Weights 506 and 596 lbs and speed of up to 60 and 20 MPH respectively for the 953 and 963 respectively. I have one with a rocking bolster, but prefer the fixed. In my opinion they were the best wagons ever built.

Can't add anymore, except the old brain cells tell me that I remember only seeing the wagons with the leaf springs at the CO-OP's in corn country with the liquid fetilizer tanks mounted on them. Don't recall ever seening leaf springs on a wagon on the farm.

P.S. It would make sence then that the leaf springs were availible on the 953 if they were rated at the higher road speeds for hauling liquid fert from town to the farm, spending most of the time on the road rather then in the field.
