Which old JD baler is the best overall?

I have only 100 acres of hay to bale, can't afford or justify a new baler.
I would like some opinions as to which old baler to buy. I would of course search until I find one that had lots of life left in it.

My tractors are older, lower HP so I need a baler to match.

I am looking hard at a 14 T. I need opinions about this model as well as 24 T and other older JD balers. What is the difference between a 14 T and 24 T, how reliable are these, are there parts and manuals?

Any suggestions on ANY old baler NH, IHC, MM, Oliver etc.... would be appreciated. (ones to avoid...ones to seek out...)

Thanks,

Jim

I bale 2-3000 bales a summer as a hobby/sideline. I have always used a new holland until this year when i bought an old 14t for $250 becuase it had a chute and my NH had a thrower but i was always short thrower wagons. I only baled 500 bales with the 14T this year but it tied EVERY bale, pulled extremely easy, took even heavy windrows very well, ran smoother and quieter than any of the new hollands i have had, and is easy to work on. I would highly recomend a 14T.

The name says it all, me and the baler. I bought a new 14T in 1963 and have used it hard every year since. The bale chamber is about worn out ,been patched, and the throat where the hay slides into the chamber is thin, It has been the best piece of equipment Deere ever built. If they ever built a better one I haven't seen it. Stay away from older balers of other models. The later balers of other brands are better. Any square baler of Deere will do you a good job if it is in reasonably good shape.

I've only run John Deere balers, and have owned the following: 2 14T's, a 24T, and now a 336 with #40 thrower. They have all been good balers for what I needed to do with them at the time. The 14T I only baled about 200 bales a year with. Sold that and bought 24T. Baled approx. 1000 bales a year for 15 years with that, NO trouble at all. Finally bought a 336 and thrower to bale approx, 2500 bales a year with, and it's been fantastic. Parts have always been readily available, and the balers are realitivly cheap to buy. A good 14T should be in the $400 price range. A good 24T around $700. For the difference in price, I'd recomend the 24T, mine was much smoother operating than the 14T. A 336 is worth quite a bit more, $2500-$3000. As far as horsepower, the 14T and 24T I pulled baler and flatrack with either a WD Allis or D-14 Allis. Both about 35 HP. The 336 and thrower rack I pull with a 170 Allis. About 55 HP I hope this will help you some. I highly recomend a JD square baler.

I have owned 2 14T, 1 24T, and a 328 till I was forced out of hog business in 98. Excellent machines. For their age a 14 or 24 has no match for user friendly, parts, or repairable. The 24T plunger runs faster then the 14 thus greater capacity. The 328 wow used to follow 9500 with 20' platform custom baling wheat straw. It and a 4430 would make two strong boys wish they found other work that day.
