Hello to all, I just brought home my grandpa's old 40, he bought new and used until he passed 2 yrs. ago. Was wondering what I should use, still 10wt.in touch-o-matic and 90 everywhere else or some new type of oil? Thanks, I'm sure I'll have some more ?'s as it goes. I already have original operators manual and I got a shop manual also, but experience from others has never hurt! I am trying to make this a real sight for my Grandma(90 yrs.old) to see,got to work fast. Thanks again for any and all help!

Joe

Food for thought. The trans oil is the same that lubes the differential. For decades now the auto/truck industry has always said that GL 5 rating lube should be used on differentials that have gears that are cut like Dubuque tractors (I think they call it hypoid). Personally, I will always use 80-140 GL 5 in my 420 trans.

Joe, those old systems were built before the modern types of hydraulic oils, I still use the 10w non-detergent motor oil in the lifts. And if the transmission has any gear noise, I use 140w gear oil in them. Also since those engines have solid lifters, and if they have not been recently overhauled, I use 30w non-detergent oil in the engine.

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it. The old tractor is really straight and putts just like it always did. I am going to give the tin a paint job and hope Granny gets a chance to see it, then give it a good going over after that. Thanks again, Joe.
