Expect the worst and go at this as if it were a parts machine. Are the castings broken and welded? Is the sheet metal in need of more work than sanblasting and painting? The stuck engine may be only the tip of the iceburg as you can't determine the condition of the transmission and final drives. All that said, for a machine to use pulling a mower, the 40U is a very desirable confiruration (with an overrunning clutch added) as it is lower and more stable than the others. A running machine, with no other probelms, but as you describe might be in the $1200 to $1500 range, maybe a little more. The rear tires may have developed some fatal cracks from sitting flat. If they are 26", they are $250 to $350 each plus tubes, mounting, etc. Take that into consideration. If the price was right, I would take a chance. You might have a jewel in the rough. If it doesn't work out, you can part it out if the housings, rear rims, front axle, etc are in good shape.

None of the castings are broken, the fenders are perfect as the hood, the nose needs some help, the tires are 11.2x24 it is orange and always has been.

If it was always orange, was it a state DOT highway mower? If so, it may have a million hours on the running gear. The 24" tires are cheap, no problem there. The parts are worth at least $1500. The sheet metal would bring at least $400 to $450 for the hood, battery box and nose. The 24" rims are quite scarce, so are worth qute a bit, maybe $100 or more EACH. The castings and 3 point parts all have value.

May we inquire as to the asking price of this tractor? At least that way an answer of go for it, haggle on the price or stay away from it could be given. Considering there were only a little over 10,000 model 40's built all total and taking into consideration all the different variations, it very well could be a jewel in the rough. How much do you want to spend on the tractor itself, how much $$ are you willing to put into it and what you plan on doing with it, use it, show it, are all something to think about also.

The owner wants $500.00 for it. I've decided that I can afford to buy it and put some money in it to get it back into shape. Probably something my 10 year old son can help with. Thanks for all the info.
