First tractor 36 A with wico c .Rebuild 4 years ago with new coil and has been working fine.Ive been keeping the points clean and adj. but lately it wont fire on the left side while starting just alot of fuel. Second 39B AP mag gone through 2 years ago use to start just fine till one day i was out plowing and it died .Found the mag loose and now it has same porblem as the A wont fire on the left side and it runs really rough at a pull such as plowing. Both have new plugs and the wico C throws spark 3/16 good, ap not so good on left side. Both need wires but tested them with new wire and plug.Help my arms are getting very long from all the cranking.

36 A, on the Wico C, I would suspect bad bushings or a loose main shaft. Might even have worn impulse lugs that aren't allowing the rotor to line up with the cap tower as the impulse snaps for the L/H side...[if you actually do have a mag problem]

~I guess with both Mags acting up the same way I would suspect a common denominator like the tractor.

~Get a new [or known good] spark plug then open the plug gap to 3/16", then install that in one plug wire at a time & lay it on the block & crank the engine. If either mag will produce a bluish spark that will jump that 3/16" gap [repeatedly] your problem probably isn't in the mag. If you aren't getting a bluish spark to jump that gap [on both sides], or you only get one or two sparks then no more, suspect the mag.

~To test the Wico, pull the outer & inner cap & install a paper clip in one of the cap screw holes then bend to within 3/16” of the coil’s center contact. It should produce a bluish spark that jumps that 3/16” gap MULTIPLE times in a row, if it does your problem lies elsewhere like the cap(s) on out to the plugs.

~On the AP, rotate it & look for a bent shaft. Then do the same 3/16” gap spark test as above.

~If you don’t pass the 3/16” spark test above try opening the points gap to .017” & re-try it. Maybe the points cam is worn, or the points are closed up & only opening on one side….

~Turn the mag impulse to the left [off the tractor], or have someone turn the flywheel [on the tractor] & see if the [spark] rotor stops just before the cap tower contact in the cap, then hangs up as the impulse is turner farther, then snaps across the cap tower as the impulse snaps. If the rotor isn’t stopping at the cap tower then snapping across as the mag snaps on the L/H side you have probably found your problem.

~You might want to check your tractor’s air cleaner for water, & plugging, then run a compression test, then verify the carb choke is operating like it is supposed to [don’t trust the external choke rod, pull the air intake & look inside to see if the choke plate is actually opening & closing all the way in both directions, or is loose, or bent..[common problem].

~Once you verify the mags are able to produce a L/H side spark that will jump that 3/16” gap [repeatedly] you will have a good idea if your problem is mag or is tractor related so post back with more information when you determine if it’s the mags or the tractor.

Hey there 36 man, when you talk of less or weaker fire on one side, do you mean you have removed the plugs or wires and one side has a weaker spark OR one cylinder side isnt running as strong??? If the spark is weak on one side, is it always the same cap terminal or if you change wires or plugs does the weak side change??? The same set of points and same coil and condensor fires BOTH cylinders, so if one side is weaker, I first suspect a cap or rotor or pickup type problem. Inspect for cracks or carbon tracks and inspect the rotor and interior cap terminals. I assume the rotor shaft bushings are not worn or wobbly and the gap is near identical on the cam lobes???

Sorry so brief, its late and I just finished several tractor question e mails and a couple long posts here and Im tireddddd ddddd ddd. I will check for your feedback tomorrow.

Good Night n God Bless

John T
