Jim, Thanks for the kind e mail and info you provided regarding your Smoking Battery post below. From what you tell me, since the engine turns freely and the starter drive is NOT engaged or stuck into the flywheel and travels freely when you depress the starter, its sounds more and more like it could be a cable or terminal or ground or battery or starter problem, so I will proceed from there and also answer your new questions. YES, there are also A Manuals and YES you should invest in one especaully if youre a beginner as you indicate. The sound you described sounds like a bad or loose or carboned up connection somewhere might make so AGAIN, remove and clean and wire brush EVERY ground and cable end and connection and I wonder how well the seat or battery box may be bonded to the main frame if your ground is to the box or seat????? If you have enough cable, run the battery ground cable direct to frame somewhere. 1) Yes, you need to to remove the starter so you can remove the switch to inspect it and the starter post under it as I described to you below and do a good job on cleaning and wire brushing and re attachign the big cable. REMOVE THE CABLE UP AT THE BATTERY FIRST. Again, if the side out starter post is pitted or burned or carboned or the switch is burned or pitted or carboned, that can be your problem. Still, you need to see exactly where that smoke is coming from you mentioned in your initial post???? 2) Be sure when you depress the starter the rod allows the switch to bottom out fully so it can electrically engage the starter post. 3) If ALL the cables and grounds (see my post below),,,,, , and connections are good (see post below),,,,, , and the battery is good as you indicated in your e mail,,,,, ,,, and the switch and starter post checked out okay as noted above,,,,, ,,, and you still get smoke and/or the starter wont turn,,,,, ,, the brushes could be worn down or not being held down tight against the commutator or the starter is simply bad and/or stuck like a bad armature or bushigns or worse even. Check the cables and grounds (dont forget the seat or battery box and how well its grounded as my post below described) and starter switch and battery and if she still dont crank or smokes and the drive is not stuck/engaged you might take the starter to a shop if youre not comfy in repairing it yourself. If you want to try, post back and/or e mail for more info. God Bless and keep us informed. John T Nordhoff in Indiana
