I have never owned a tractor and was approached with a 1964 JD 1010 RU for $3850. Is this a good price and what should I be looking for. I want to plow/disk/run a tiller for deer plots.

I own a 1010 RU and it fulfills my needs. However, the price you have been quoted sound very high to me unless the tractor is in nearly new condition. I paid $2250 for mine. There are things about it I don't like but I suppose that would happen with pretty much any tractor.

Go to page 4 or maybe by now page 5 of this format. I kind of lay it on the line about 1010's in general. A fisrt time tractor buyer and a 1010 is not a good match. Like the other post says, a 430 or a 1020 is better for a first timer. 1010 owners are in a class by themselfs. Those that have them love them. They are neat looking though.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where I can see any pictures of a 1964 JD 1010 RU on line?

I don't personally own one, but the opinions of this group are that the 1010 was not Deere's best effort. The next model, 1020 has gotten much better reviews. The early ones -1961- were known to have some engine problems. Some say that the 1010 is just a 430 with a 4 cyclinder engine. The HP is about the same and if I wanted a tractor to use, the 430 would be my choice of the two.

I hope that others will add to this.
