Finally got the starter out and on workbench tonight. Hooked it up to my battery carger (hoked positive to flange of starter and negative to terninal where it would be hooked to the battery) and it still does nothing. I could hear a slight noese, but not really a click or a lound hum when I picked up on the starter switch. I can turn the gear by hand so I suspect the switch. Any advice on how to check the switch or what to do next? Thanks, Jim

I recently had a starter rebuilt for a '52 JD A. It was cleaned and painted inside and out. A new stationary contact was installed in the switch. all the bushings are new. The commutator was turned and undercut and the brushes were replaced and seated. The drive unit was replaced. All of that for $75.00, compared to a competitor at $250.00 for a rebuilt, plus exchange. I could've done it myself, but I was in a time crunch. That and some of the parts he had I probably couldn't get.

Jim: those starter are really tough. I don't think you're going to get anywhere with a charger. Like John T. said, vise the unit. Remove the starter switch and you will have the starter connector. What I do is connect ground to starter to battery. Then lead from batter touch the connector. You can then see if your unit is good. If it drags, I then tear down, check brushes, clean out the grove on the armetur and this should work. I normally use a slight amount of never seeze on the bushings. I have never found one of these starters burned out, not to say that there isn't one out there. I think the dudes are a lot tougher than the batteries.....

Hey there Jim, On the bench it doesnt take much energy to at least make a starter spin, but how big is your charger??? A tiny trickle charger would not be enough to turn it but a large charger may (depending on its size) at least spin it over if its okay. Be sure its vised down good cuz they have a real good torque when they start and a vise allows for a good frame ground connection which just touching/brushing the charger clamps may not. It takes a decent connection to those cables to spin even on a bench test. I suggest you use a battery for a bench test actually as its quite a load on a charger dragging its voltage down assuming you have a charger large enough to do the job in the first place.

Okay, if its well connected and a battery still dont spin it and shes not stuck mechanically, I would remove the switch and see if its contactor or the copper starter post is burned or carboned or pitted. Its possible to jump direct to that starter post (with switch removed) but try not to arc and burn it as its a difficult surface (just a round post with no sharp sides to bite on) to get any good connection on.

If it will not spin with a battery on a bench test and the starter switch and post out the starter is good, it may be a brush problem (could even be stuck and not held down tight against the commutator, a hammer rap may free them up) or an armature problem. If it has that classic burned electrical smell, you may need an overhaul.

Let me know.

Good Luck n God Bless

John T
