i found a restored 1928 John Deere GP with a slant plug head on full steel. looks like a million bucks. does not run. what do you think is a fair offer for it? polk's supposedly told the guy he guaranteed $14K take home as is, $18K if it is running.

Jim,
What other equipment does this tractor have on it? Does it have the flat sided final drive housings? Correct flat spoke front steel? Correct air cleaner? Correct governor? Early PTO? Why does it not run?
Certainly, the slant plug cyl head is valuable property.

the tractor has the correct front and rear steel wheels, the left final drive was changed but i will get a correct replacement with the tractor. it has the correct governor and air cleaner. no early PTO. i found out that it did not run because the flywheel was installed about 100 degrees off. the tractor has the correct early GP steering wheel and correct carburetor but does not have the R-2 magneto. i have an R-2 for it. i need an early PTO and i have later PTO's w/powerlifts to possibly trade if i can find one.

It sounds like a really good tractor, but 14K is pretty stiff, although it may be worth it if the condition is really good. You can always pick up an R-2 magneto, just be prepared to pay a big price. What is the overall condition of the tractor?
Got any extra power lifts? I have one but the case is cracked.

i have 4 or 5 PTO/power lifts units. some are cracked and some are not. the ones that are aren't cracked as bad as some i have seen. i will be advertizing the units and hope to sell them. i want an early PTO for the GP. i think $14K is a bit stiff too. i have an R-2 coming in the next week or two. price was not as bad as most i have seen.

Jim,
How will you be selling the GP power lifts? Can you email me with any for sale? My email is phil.maria"at"nelsonstud.com, just replace the "at" with @ (getting spam paranoid!).
Thanks,
PM

the slant plug is the one where the spark plug screws into the head at a 22 degree angle. it does not screw straight into the head like the later heads have. this was an update to the GP by John Deere. if you look at the head through the tractor from the flywheel side, see if the plugs face the direction of where 10 o'clock is. if it faces 9 o'clock, you do not have a slant plug head. the casting number is the same from the slant to the straight plug one. what is the serial number of your tractor? email me if you get a chance. thanks.
