I have a JD 4630. Nice machine other than it has no low-end torque. This is the way all of them are so I am told. Has anyone found a cure for this problem besides installing an other engine ie: JD 466? Once I am up over 1600 RPM it is fine. Just no low end.

About the only thing you can do to help low end torque is take the injection pump off and take it to a good injetion pump place have them run it on a stand , I mean good place there are some around . They can change the torque capsule to one that gives more torque . Have them set the top end fuel setting 10% over stock setting and set the maximum torque to come on at 1900rpm , that way you will not pull down to say 15-1600 , shouldn't run it that low anyway . By just turning the pump up you are just putting more fuel out at high rpm and are not doing much for the lower end . A good pump man will know how to do it . Hope I haven't confused you too much , that's the way I do it and lots of others too . The 404 is not the best on low end as others said but this helps some .

I would like to thank everyone for the input. I think I will probably want to put a 466 in that machine. I am going to talk to my pump man and see what he has to say for a follow up to the post of 4020dt. The biggest complaint is getting my grain cart, silage wagon or something similar in motion to have it in high enough gear to tavel down the road. Thanks again, Jim

We had a 75' 4630, same deal. My dad however worked at a diesel shop and the owner was a genius at pumps. He took our pump and installed what he called "torque capsules" when under a load she'd up the fuel and then once the load was off it would go back to stock. Ours turned 182 on the dyno, when the torque capsules kicked in she'd do 215. The only problem was then we had trouble keeping it on the ground with 20.8 38's. But its still a 404, and theres no replacement for displacement.

That's a fairly common complaint on the 4430/4630. The 404s were and are good engines, but they're wrapped pretty tight in those tractors to deliver that much horsepower, and low-end torque suffers. I don't know that there's anything you can do for them, other than turn the fuel up, because the pump is going to be injecting all the fuel it is set for as the engine pulls down. A 466 is probably the only real cure, and is not hard to install. Either that or sell the 4630 and move up to a 4640. Even a good-running 4440 will outlug a 4630.

Your comments are right on the money. Way back when, both my buddy and I ran 4230's for our respective dads. Buddy's dad traded up to a 4430, they loved the horsepower but didn't feel it had the lowend of even the 4230. They traded up to a 4440 a year or two later and it was a tremendous difference in low-end power.

Yep, same deal. Above 1900-hard to stop. At 1500, not as much torque as a turboed 4010. There's simply NO substitute for cubic inches!
