My dad quit farming this year at 81 and gave me his 69 or 70 4020. My pto cluctch is leaking and John Deere wants big money to split the tractor and fix the leak. I can borrow a shop, thinking of doing it myself. Any info would be helpful.
Also I must ease into gears or transmission growls when I let off clutch and is not engaged.
Any info on this. I hope to restore this one, due sentimental value, but have lots to do. Thanks in andvance. Jerry B

If you split your tractor or attempt Jer's idea, also check that the pto lever is adjusted, take the side shield off and make sure the shaft going into the pto valve housing is bottomed out. While your tractor is running and the pto engaged look at the pistons that are leaking, if they are pulsating then the pto valve needs adjusting and/or replacement, or you will be having the same leak again shortly. Check your adjustment on the shifter and the endplay on the shafts that go into the housing. Then also drain the hydraulic oil and replace filter and clean the suction screen. good luck chris

Sounds like the pistons that engage the pto are leaking. Common problem. It is possible to replace without splitting the tractor. Need to take off the plate below the clutch then loosen the two bolts with springs on the bearing carrier then take out the bolts on the back plate that contains the pistons so you can rotate the plate. Pull out the pistons with a magnet. Take a small mirror and a hook pick and pull out the orings and packing rings. Then reverse procedure for installing. Besure the two bolts with springs are equally tightend or the orings wont last long.

It would be helpful to know which transmission you have in this tractor. Powershift or synchro-range?

I have the syncro range transmission on my 4020.
When moving shift lever into a gear, if I shift it solid into the slot, I let off clutch and all I get is growling, trans not engaged, If I shift real easy, it will usually catch and engage transmission. Hope this helps. Also hydraulics will go out at idle sometimes. I can up throttle and hear the pump engage after a while and steering returns. This tractor is well used, but has lots of sentimental value and I want to get it restored. Thanks for any help. Jerry

RE: shifting..... locally, this is known as over-shifting; not sure what's actually happening in the transmission, but it's very common in high hour tractors; got a couple that have been doing it for years and years with no apparent ill effect; just "lay" the lever easily into the slot.....
