When they introduced the 6076 engine that replaced the 6466, Deere did change the heads. That coincided with the intro of the 55-series tractors. Instead of having each individual intake port stay separate all the way out to the manifold mounting area on the head, they brought the ports out part way and then opened up the area so that each pair of siamesed ports shared a larger common port. The intake manifolds were also revised to have one large port at each pair of cylinders, instead of individual ones. This made a big improvement in flow and efficiency, which is why it became the head of choice for pullers. They're also stronger heads and I believe have a thicker deck surface, so they're less prone to warpage.
