Clooney---All is well with the governor bearings----Just have to get the fan gear aligned up properly-----I installed another gear off an A---but it had a different #---looked ok but made lots of noise----and shimming didn't help----I cleaned up the old gear today and installed it,ran it for 25 minutes---If i have time tomarrow i will look to see if it left any metal chips---It didn't make any noise today and i had about an inch of play in the fan---

Have a problem timing my 41A which I believe is due to govener bearing wear? Have found new wear marks on the inside of my new mag cap from the new rotor I've installed, and that's just from cranking this old girl over by hand? The shaft the rotor rides on obviously isn't running true so is this a big and complicated job to replace the bearing, or can the average guy do something like this in the course of an afternoon?

Rob---sounds like you have a problem with the mag---either the bushings are warn--or the rotor isn't firmly in place----because the cupler that hooks the mag.and gov.togethe is a loose fit---the mag fits into the slot on the end of the governor shaft---you need to take the mag.off and check for play in the shaft----- ---- Good luck--Jim

Jim, as you found out you really should keep those fan gears as a matched set.. I have in the past swapped out only one gear but they will scream for quite a while after that is done..

~Take a fine honing stone or very fine file & remove any gear tooth wear & flash on the tooth sides of both gears, then set the gear depth so the heels [rear of the gears] lines up exactly.. Then set the back lash to about 1" of fan blade tip movement on used gears.. Those gears might still talk for a while but will usually quiet down as they re-wear in..
