I am getting ready to buy a 1972 John Deere 4000 desiel with the syncro shift tranny. I have a few questions that I think you all can help me with.
Is it 12 or 24 volt charging or how can I check to find out? Also if it is 24 is there a 12 volt conversion?
The pto makes a growling sound when ingauged what would cause such a sound?
It is missing a few things on the dash (pto knob and the trotle override knob) Is there somewhere I can contact to get these peices?

I think you all in advance for any help you can give me.

How much do you all think this tractor is worth? It is all original and the paint is in fair to good condition. The only ailments it has are stated in my earlier post.

Nice ones in my area (Central New York) bring $7000 to $10,000.

All Gas and Diesel Model 4000 John Deere tractors are 12 Volt Positive ground electrical systems. They used a Motorola alternator from the factory. The growling noise that you are hearing when engaging the PTO is most likely coming from the PTO clutch throw out/ engagement bearing. This bearing is like the traction clutch throw out bearing only it runs when the PTO is engaged and does not when the PTO is shut off, just the opposite of the traction clutch throw out bearing. If it is the PTO bearing the tractor will have to be split to replace it. There is a place to lubricate this bearing with a grease gun on the side of the clutch housing.

Your alternator equipped 4000 is 12v. All of the 4000 tractors were alternator equipped, had side consoles, and were 12v. The change was made in the 1969 model year.

I've never seen a 24 volt 4000, thinks it's too new for that. Early serial # 4020s had 24/-12/+12 systems custom designed by Delco-Remy. PTO growl could just be a bad bearing, depends where the growl is coming from. It's likey you can still buy the other parts right from Deere.

Yes?? I don't dispute that, in fact I've got a 4000 sitting in my driveway. I didn't say anthing about a 4000 being positive ground. I mentioned that early 4020s used a system that was 24/-12/+12, which is to say it used a 24 volt cranking system, and an operating system that was split down the middle - 12 volt neg. on one side, and 12 volt pos. on the other.
