transmission gear oil

I am going to change transmission and differetial oil in my 730D. I know I should use GL1 but was wondering if I could use a synthetic. Can anybody help and also explain why or why not?

The cost of synthetic like gear lube is shocking to me. I considered it briefly when I changed the fluids on my 730D last fall.

Consider that if you get the proper lubrication and a weight that keeps your transmission and rear end quiet that perhaps the biggest thing would be to change the fluid with some frequency as the biggest threat is water from condensation.

Extended change interval is often listed as a major reason for synthetic.

My decision was to go with SAE 90 as the service manual dictates.

John Deere Manual I believe recommends spring annual changes.

John, 90 weight GL-1 would be just fine for that 730... You could probably use a synthetic 90 weight if you really wanted to but I don't see you gaining much from it.. Most synthetics are thinner at lower temps so you will probably experience more gear noise & your chance of gear oil leaks will be higher. Using a multi weight synthetic gear oil won't do much either as the trans oil in those 2-cylinder Deere's stays pretty cool for most of its use so an 85W140 would stay pretty close to 85W most of the time. Due to the low trans gear RPM's & straight cut gears the high EP additives in the synthetic oils won't help you there either..

~I guess the pro's of synthetic gear oil would be easier trans shifting at below 15°F & possibly more miles per gallon of fuel.

~The con's would be more trans noise, higher probably of oil leaks at the gaskets, covers, & especially the clutch pulley.. If the synthetic gear oil has a high concentration of EP additives [most do] then there is a greater chance of yellow metal damage in the trans or gear tooth pitting under certain conditions [not a real big concern though]...
