Clooney,

How do you calibrate the RPM's with anything on an old tractor without any needle on the instrument panel telling you how many RPM;s you are going?? Am I asking this right?

thanks,
tom

Tom, that's a fair question...

Personally I use an electronic selectable input tac on the coil's distributor side but you can also use a hand held machine shaft speed tac on either the PTO or belt pulley [if it has one]...

____On the "M"____

PTO RPM [at 1825 engine RPM] = 609 RPM

Belt Pulley RPM [at 1825 engine RPM] = 1746 RPM

Thanks Clooney...I knew there had to be a device that registered some kind of output to ascertain the RPM's.

If however, the compression was bad or some other engine debilitating issue [bad plugs, weak coil, etc] that impacted performance, would this give a false reading on the e-input tac? I guess the device will read whatever the performance is, but now what it should be. The reason I ask is that I would like to have my JD checked, but I believe i need new rings/valve job and perhaps more because of excessive blow-by.

thx, tom

Tom, those selectable input tac's just read the number of times the points open per minute & compute that into Revolutions Per Minute. If the points are oxidized or otherwise won't always open & close reliably then the tac could have errors but under most conditions they work pretty good. If there is any doubt about ignition performance effecting the tac just use a hand held shaft speed tac on the PTO shaft..
