Well, we use our puters to tractor chat right? So this is sort of tractor related then ? Anywho, my favorite daughter called from Ball State cuz she needed puter help (my attempts to get her to date Nerds failed miserably) and had to reinstall Windows XP on top of itslef. In so doing, it reinstalled Outlook and she lost all her Outlook E Mail addresses. Old dad had her find her *.wab address book files and then in Outlook she was able to import her address book data. Now, I know all her old e mail messages are stored somewhere and she can get them back cuz Ive done it, but I forget how to and what file extension to search for to find her old e mails. In Outlook, you can Import Messages, but it just looks for Import from Outlook or Outlook Express etc.

So my questions are, what are the file extensions to search (old e mail messages) for and/or how do you find and import all the old e mail messages into her again installed Outlook???? I know Ive done it before and they were buried deep in the bowells of my puter in like C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Microsoft\?????

Thanks Yall n God Bless

John T, I use a little program called Express Assist, you can find it on Downloads.com. It backs up e-mail, favorites,e-mail accounts and other stuff in outlook. Then you can retrive what you want from the backups. Great program.

Howdy John---

The path should go something like this:

C:\windows\application data\microsoft\outlook\*.pst

Outlook.pst will be the current file and, if she has been archiving as we all should, there will be an Archive.pst file, as well. Grab them both. You will have to overwrite the outlook.pst that was created when the new Outlook first opened. You may have to point Outlook to your transfered file for the first time, only.

Good Luck

If they were stored in a personal folder within outlook you might want to look for the *.pst files also. This is the extension for personal folders. Then remount the personal folder and you have your emails. Just something else to try.

Thanks Clooney and JB, Yep, the .eml file extensons are definitely e mail files and icons, but instead of the 100 I have, a search only found 6 or 7???? Also, the dbx show up as e mail inbox type files so Im gettign there. In Outlook Express you can do an Import/Messages but it only gives you choices of an entire program, not a specific file extension or location. I know I did this before but it was while on the phone with Microsoft and YES the files were hidden deep like the areas JB mentioned.

Thnaks John T

Hi, the inbox is stored in the file Inbox.dbx.
Do a search for *.dbx and you should find the new ones and the old ones. When XP is reinstalled it will generate a new C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{7C3A8DB8-AE6B-4FC5-BD15-F7728302A970}\Microsoft\Outlook Express with a different GUID(sequence of number & letters between { } brakets) so you will find the Inbox.dbx, Sent.files, Outbox.dbx under the old GUID.
Be careful connecting XP to the internet without SP1 + additional MS security patches installed. There are worms out there looking for unpatched XP.

Good luck
JB
