I have a 1953 JD 40T (single front wheel) that seems to have a bearing going out in the transmission. That's were the sound is coming from. It starts to squeal when it has been run for awhile, and does not go away until it cools back down. Oil level is fine. I planned on splitting it this weekend. I am looking for a little advice on which bearing or bearings could be the colprit and what to look out for. Input/output shaft bearings, shims etc.? I do have a service manual, but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jim

Before busting her apart there would be some playing around I would do first. My experience with those Dubuques is that the noise travels and confuses me.

You did not say what effect pushing the clutch in has on the noise. How about neutral and in motion is all gears? That would be a key issue to me. Even if it changed the pitch or level, it would sure indicate something in the clutch area to me.

Clutch deals call for a split at the engine. Tranny deals call for a split farther back, usually along with final drive pulling.

Hopefully Wayne will have the solution for you.

Good luck
