As it was thought that the fault must be after the coil, rotor or cap, I took these from yet another AP magneto (I have 5)this morning. First two empty impulses, and then a good strong spark from both towers. Very pleasing indeed!
Next, I took the faulty pieces to the other mag which is on a BR that had not been started since last summer. A little gas in the tank and it took off on both cylinders after a couple of turns on the wheel. Clooney you called the AP "devils", I agree. Thank you John T and Clooney for the input.

Johan, You're most welcome [not sure we really did help you as it sounds like you figured it out yourself]

On the mag spark VS. snap? .. First two empty impulses is probably normal as the AP is a gear reduction mag [depends on where you started]..

~When swapping coils you could have made a better connection somewhere, or disturbed a rust buildup, or maybe the coil is a little better & will produce a spark with a little less magnetic rotor current.. Then on the other AP the magnetic rotor could be stronger.. A weak magnetic rotor or weak coil could easily have been the problem..

~Those AP mags are little devils aren’t they?..

Any further questions or if you need any set-up information just give me an E-Mail as I do have some specs & setting procedures for that AP mag..

Congratulations Johan, glad we could help (if we did, but it looks like your own work done it).

The very act of removing and replacing or swapping parts may have cured a minor almost undetectable problem.

And Thank You for the feedback, its always good to hear from a poster with his results, especially if favorable.

John T
