Hi, I have a S1742 Scotts (John Deere made) lawn tractor with a gear shift. The unit is 3 years old and now it will start, the mower will engage but the lawn tractor will not move. I looked at the belts and they seem fine and our in place. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We just picked up a Scotts/JD 1642H hydro trans. lawntractor which operates about like yours, ie. engine runs well, mower engages OK, but tractor doesn't move. The Forward/Neutral/Reverse shift handle seems to be "stuck", and doesn't move easily as it should.
Checked the belts, seem to be turning OK, but wondered if the problem is in the transaxle somewhere (anybody?). Were you able to fix your problems with your tractor?

Is pulley on top of trans turning the input shaft?
The splines on the pulley or on the input shaft could be bad. Also check the keyway in both rear wheels
