Jeremy, you didn't give the year of your "H".. The early [1939] are different than the later [40 & up]..

~First you are going to have to use a mechanics stethoscope, or long bar, or long piece of hose & listen to the different areas on your tractor to determine exactly where the noise is coming from..

~Your hydraulic pump could easily be the noise producer [that pump turns all the time].. It could also be excessively worm cam to governor gears [common on the early H’s],, or the L/H cam gear needs to be adjusted up tighter [later H’s],, or elliptical wear on the governor or cam gear [somewhat common problem].. Or even a loose L/H cam gear [somewhat common on the H’s]..

~It could also be your governor to fan shaft gears still making a noise.. Just adjusting [shimming] those gears won’t remove most howling noises until the gear set is run for quite a while to re-seat in to each other.. If you didn’t use a stone or fine grinder & remove the tooth end wear flash they might never quiet down..

~You can pull the fan shaft back out & run that tractor without the fan shaft in it & see if the noise goes away.. If that removes the noise remove the gear tooth end wear [sharp flashing] on both fan drive & driven gears with a stone, set then set the heels [backs] of the gears to be exactly even, & set the gear backlash [fan blade tip movement]to be about 3/8”-1/2”..

~If that pump is dry it must have oil in it or you can just remove the pump & install the later governor cover with the long snout on it [be sure to re-set the governor to fan gear backlash [fan blade tip movement]..

~If the noise is definitely coming from the fan gears & you are sure you set them up correctly & the tooth end flashing isn’t excessive you can try just operating the tractor for a few hours to see if the noise decreases after some break-in time.. It’s normal for those fan gears to howl a little if their adjustment is disturbed..

~If you can be more specific on exactly what’s causing the noise we can be much more helpful on how to eliminate the noise.

Any questions just post back or E-Mail…

Jeremy, the last time I installed and meshed a set of fan and governor bevel gears, even though I set the mesh as perfect as I could tell, it also whined for a while, but once the gears seated in to each other, it ran quiet ever since. If they were meshed in too tight/deep it could whine also. Did you just re set the exisitng gears or did this involve a new set??? If a used set, were they both from the same tractor???
