There has been a thread of great interest on the "other JD board" lately about the plow capacity of these tractors. Jim Guarino was gracious enough to provide some pictures of an 820 plowing with 6 bottoms. There are 3 pictures posted here in the tractor photo section.

Just crawled off from an 820 with 4 x 16" 6x0 series trailer plow. Heavy loam soil, not mucky, and probably well packed from a couple of coats of manure with a Ford 5000 with fluid. 8" deep, new tires, no fluid, three sets of weights and second gear. 9" deep we were looking for better traction and more power. Tractor is is in good condition and I'm guessing set on factory specs.. Tractor would take it in third when a field cultivator had made a pass at it.

I just finished photographing Jim Fenton's 830 pulling a JD 777 6-16s near Palmer, Alaska, for the Classic Tractor Calendar. Soils in Alaska's farming area there are a mix of sand and fine-particle loess clay loam (at least to my eye) and plowing is easy compared to gumbo. In the midwest, most 820-830s pulled 5-14s or -16s when they were new. Was never around the model 80s much (weren't many of them built) but suspect they mostly pulled 4 bottoms. Remember, in the late 50s the guys with 720s and 730s were almost all pulling 4-14s or -16s. So, they had to pull at least one more with the 8s! But you will see all kinds of variations. We had two brothers who were neighbors who pulled 4-12s with their 620 and 630 and mounted 3-12s with a 530. Mike-Iowa

My father bought a used 820 in 1960. He paid for the tractor custom plowing for $3 a acre(fuel and operator included) pulling 5/14's. The bank said he was crazy paying $3025 for the tractor. I have a neat home movie that my uncle filmed showing the tractor hooked in tandem with a 630 that dad made a hitch and removed the front wheels to hook directly to the back of the 820 in a hard plowing fall. He was the only one who could plow that dry fall in North Iowa. Mark
