B Power Lift System

Ok got some really dumb rookie questions here. I hooked up a cylinder to the outlet on my '46 B power lift system. Needless to say it doesn't work. Looks to me from the manual you are supposed to step on the pedal and the shaft will turn up and the cylinder would extend out. The cylinder outlet is hooked to an elbow coming from the bottom of the square housing. When you would pull back on the lever will the shaft turn down by itself or does it need weight to pull it down? Same thing for the cylinder will it go back in by itself or will it need to push it back in by hand or by the weight of whatever it is hooked to? I pulled the square housing piece off of the back and the piston was in the out position. I turned the shaft just a touch with a wrench and then it snapped back into the all the way in position (spraying oil all over me and everything else in the process)Its been a learning experience this afternoon. Check the "Implement Alley" for my pile of questions on a #5 mower. Thanks for any help or ideas.

Jeff, My recommendation would be to replace the Power Lift with the Power-Troll I did mine on a 46 B and what a great difference. I keep all of my gravel in the driveway in the winter now....

Those foot pedal power lifts were not originaly made to run a cylinder. JD however did offer a conversion kit that you had to install a new valve,a hand lever, and drill your casting in the back offcenter and plumb into there. If you need to run a cylinder you will more than likely have to get a power-trol box off a later tractor and bolt to your housing and remove the power-lift.
