There are 7 Stud bolts for the cylinder head. The John Deere gasket set includes 3 lead washers for stud bolts. Which Stud bolts use the lead washers?

Jim, that's a good question. The book doesn't really show. I have always just used a lead washer under all the head nuts on those H's as I usually have a few extra laying around [I used to buy those washers by the box of 100].. The washers should really be used on the studs inside the engine [under the rocker cover].. I guess you could do a little checking & make sure to use the washers on any stud that goes into the water jacket part of the block. Any nuts outside the rocker cover area won’t hurt anything if they seep a little [just makes a small mess].. Deere used to sell those lead washers separately but some of the new head kits contain copper washers so you will have to check. Personally I refuse to use those copper washers as they partially squeeze out of position & don’t seem to function very good.

~I have also just used Loc-Tite PST pipe sealer as it has Teflon in it & stays pliable. I’m not real fond of any of the permanent sealers or silicone sealers as those harden then the seal gets broken when the head re-torque is done at a later time.

I have great luck with using Black Gasket-Maker instead of the lead washers... I just feel it does the same job, and is better for the job.. I think I get a better final torque on the bolts with the gasket-maker, too..

Ron.
