What years did Deere build a "D" with one exhaust stack on each side of the engine? Why did they do this? I have only seen one like this. I think it was a mid 40's model. Are they rare?

John, the guys are right. The dual exhaust manifold is aftermarket, and I carry it. I can also help you out with some very cool looking chrome stacks.

We've got a couple of these. One has the aftermarket manifold and the other has a home made tube manifold. They sound really neat!

John don't think Deere ever had one leave the factory that way, even tho I know a guy that swears his is a X model.(not) Also the purest and NATPA don't like them. They were a after market product (still being made by Rosewood Machine)(3 pieces) and used with gas, HA or any higher compression pistons. There is a claim that it gave a gain of up to 8 HP also. I do know that i lost 6 HP by the dyno when I went back to the so called cold JD manifold. They are the only TRUE COLD manifold made in my books except the LP one and it's kinda small and frosts up so bad at times. All the others still run the right hand exhaust around or by the intake.
If you like, email me and I will send you a pic or 2 of some more twins and the one that took 1st in the 7500# Div II yesterday.(Just had to insert that)
Bob

Email is john.oelfke@young-america.com. I would love to see some pics. If you put gas pistons in a late D and the after market double exhaust, can you get about 40 horse out of them? I don't want to extensivley modify one but gas pistons and that cool double exhaust would be great! - John

John: A late "D" came from the factory pruducing about 44hp, if I remember correctly. Though I've never tried this, I'm thinking that with aluminum high comp pistons(maybe 7-1 or thereabouts)& the cold/dual exhaust, that 501cu in engine(more if bored out), should make 60+ on a dyno. Maybe I'm only dreaming here, but have seriously condidered doing this to my '47 "D" just to find out. If you do this be sure to post back with your results.

John they didn't.. Most of those dual exhaust D's you see are running a Rosewood Machine dual manifold.. That Manifold is patterned after an early aftermarket manifold [can’t remember who at the moment though]..

Kind of neat aren't they?
