I posted this long ago but the problem still never got fixed grrrrr rrrrr rr. Its tractor related cuz I use my motorhome to pull my tractor to tractor shows????

I have an Onan 2 cyl 4 KW Genset with old fashion points, condensor and carb. So far I have installed a new Onan coil, new points set correct and condensor and plugs and thoroughlly cleaned the carb including its nozzle, needle n seat, power adjuster valve etc etc. It has an electric fuel pump which seems to shoot fuel real well into the carb.

Heres its problem: It has a good hot spark, starts well and runs the AC, but has an intermittent stumble where it cuts out n spits n sputters and shakes, maybe a bit of black smoke, but then catches up n runs without completely dying. Ive heard of their valve guides n stems carboning up, but one thinks after enough running with Mobil 1 it ought to clean up?? Ive also heard of loose valve seats ????? ???? It seems one of the plugs may blacken and soot up more than I like instead of that nice warm gray color, but I adjust the power valve screw to where she runs best under a load and DO NOT have it set too lean or too rich. If it ran bad all the time I may figure her out better, but that runing fine with occassional cut outs has me cornfuseddddd ddddd d. Although I set the power valve about right when loaded (about between where she leans out or loads up) and shes not blowing any black smoke whatsoever, the exhaust has a tell tale smell of one thats runnign too rich??

Any you Onan men or others got any ideas????? ? If its not carb or ignition, Im awfully afraid may have to get into the valves grrrrr rrrrr rrr.

Thanks n God Bless Yall

Thanks all, I installed a new fuel pump whivh really helped, now Im investigating a control relay and resistor which feeds 12 volts to the pump ONLY if youre cranking it to start or its running. That could be bad or intermittent??

Go to NAPA and get you 2 cans of Sea Foam. Put one in the oil and one in the gas tank. If it is anything to do with dirt, carbon, gum-up, etc the Sea Foam will disolve it. Great product, especially for diesel's.

Bill, I have to agree with you there.. I have used that stuff for quite a while now.. Never used in a diesel though... Have you had luck using it on plugging injectors?

My experience with my 1975 Onan powered Bolens, we bought new is.. When mine get's those symptoms...it is some fine dirt going thru the needles...causing the fuel mixture to change... I can't remember for sure, right now.wheather mine has a second needle on the same side of the carb, for idle adjustment...I believe it does....or else it is the floatbowl drain..!! I put dual exhausts on mine, eliminating all the heat associated with the original muffler...seems I have had much less trouble since I did... A heck of a lot easier to get to the mixture screws now, too..!! As far as wear..Before I overhauled mine, I was running about 60% STP, and had the oil dipstick tied down so it didn't blow out, and it still ran good...just loaded up from the rings un-seating at anything over 1/2 throttle..!! Bored it over 1/4" to the size of the "Big-Bore Onan"...best way to go..!!
