I took off the first reduction gear cover, and of course the first reduction and powershaft gears fell out. Anyway I was wondering which side of the first reduction gear goes toward the tractor. One side has the splines or whatever that go all the way to the edge, the other doesn't. Just wondering because I'm putting it back together tomorrow, and I have a shop manual, and by the way the picture looks about the way it goes back on, it looks like it would be backwards. Thank you.

Jo,
The side with the splines all the way to the edge goes out toward the outside. The side with the recessed splines goes toward the powershaft gear (the other reduction gear). It is a realy pain in the axx lining everything up. I found a piece of black pvc tubing that fit just right on the transmission drive gear. You just slide the gears in the cover and then the tube through all of it and just right onto the gear. The hardest part is that darn spacer between the bearings in the powershaft gear. Good luck.....
oh yeah one more hint...try cutting some 7/16 threaded rod and using it in a few of the cover holes for easier allignment of the cover. Let me know if I can be of more help. Thanks
Tyler

Figured that was it, hadn't tried it before I did it. I actually put the gears on the shaft, and pulled them as far as possible to the end. I removed the pulley shield and the ring that bolts behind the pully. With about 2 seconds of maneuvering, you can swing the end around both gears while on the shaft, keeping the pulley hole on the other end close to the crank. It can swing right in that way if you get it just right. So far it seems I even got the whole thing back together correctly.
