I need the schematics for a 1953 50. I pulled the instrument cluster piece back and the two wires coming from the generator came off and I don't really know where they go. Is there a book I could get that would have this info?

Jeff, the white wire goes [went] to the NON battery side post of the ammeter & the black wire went to [BAT] terminal on the light/ignition switch..

~If you give me an E-Mail [put “B wiring” in the subject line] I will send you a proper wiring diagram.. Seeing as you have a 1953 50 I will also have know the serial number range as there is a difference in the early & later 50 wire diagrams.. There is also a generic 50, 60, 70 520, 620, 720 wire diagram floating around out there on the internet so be careful of that one as it isn’t correct for the 1953 50..

Jeff, Send me an e mail to jmn50@msn.com and I will return e mail you a wiring schematic. As far as the wiring until you get it, I can tell you this. You say there were 2 wires up from the Generator??? On a 3 wire Voltage Regulator system, there would only be one to the ammeter, but on a 4 wire VR system, there would be one to the ammeter and another to your switch (12 v feed to its BAT input terminal). Regardless how the tractor came originally, I have seen them rewired all sorts of different ways.

1) If you had a 4 wire Voltage Regulator system (requires 2 wires up to dash), typical terminals would be BAT FLD and LOAD (L) up on top and often the 4th ARM (or GEN) terminal would be off on one side all by itself or on the bottom. It wires as follows:

BAT up to the load (NOT to battery) side of Ammeter.

FLD to the Generators Field post.

LOAD (L) up to the BAT input terminal on the dash switch to feed loads such as lights and ignition etc.

ARM to the Gens Armature post.

2) If you just had a 3 wire Voltage Regulator (requires only 1 wire up to dash), its terminals would be BAT ARM & FLD, it wires as follows:

BAT still up to ammeter's load (NOT to battery) side.

ARM (or GEN) on VR to Generator's Armature post.

FLD on VR to Generator's Field post.

The tractor was originally positive ground, but some got changed over the years. You need to be wired correct, polarized, and the Gen and VR well grounded plus a good tight belt to charge properly.

If you have any other wiring or charging issues or questions, post back or e mail them to me and I will try my best to get you wired correct and going. Perhaps some of the other fine gentllmen here can offer other tips or opinions as well, but this ought to get you a start.

Good Luck n God Bless ya Jeff
