How much do you want to spend. I have a 3/4 acre pond stocked with fish. Over the years, I have tried most everything out there. First consideration, Cattails are tough. If you religiously cut them below the waterline and mow them low they will die out. Rodeo and Roundup are Chemical name "Glyphosate". Buy the cheapest brand with the highest %age of active ingredient. You can add veg oil as a surfactant. Glyphosate is safe and effective, but you will have to reapply fairly often. Sonar or Avast, chemical name "Fluridone" is more effective with one application often lasting several years, but the price is ridiculously expensive. Both of the above are safe for fish. The other chemicals are either relatively ineffective or unsafe for fish. Over the long run, Fluridone, may be more effective and price wise for the person who wants a totally weed free pond. At the present time, I am letting my pond go natural with exception of cutting any cattails if they reemerge (5 years without) The water lilies and other weeds give the fish a place to spawn and to escape/avoid the ever present Blue Herons.

John T, the nurseryman from whom I buy my lawn care products told me about some of the products that were mentioned when we were wondering what to do about the primrose problem on our lake but for catails, he said to just mix some Roundup with a couple tablespoons of vegtable oil. Roundup will most certainly take care of the catails and the vegtable oil will help the chemical cling to the plant. It worked on the catails and I can't see where we did any harm to the aquatics.HJ

Hello John T. All of these guys have given you solid advice and to take that one step further, check out www.southernpondsandwildlife.com. This is a quarterly pond and wildlife management magazine that I layout and design for some friends who own a sport fish hatchery here in Alabama. I grew up on a soybean and beef cattle farm and it always amazes me how many of the same rules apply to aquaculture. Don’t let the name fool you. Many of the topics covered apply to other areas besides the south. Anyone who own a pond or participates in wildlife management can glean many helpful tips from this magazine.

The neighbor lady has Scottish Highlanders. They go in half way up their sides to yank out the delicious treats. They are almost extinct there now.

Rodeo is the aquatic version of Roundup. Triple the price but surfactant is supposed to be safer for fish. Sonar is also a pond herbicide but not sure if it will do cattails. You can check labels at www.greenbook.net. In MD you must have a permit from Dept. of Environment for aquatic applications.

Can throw out some names....more algaecides (maybe) than herbicides.....Cutrine, Aquathol K, Copper Sulfate; used to grow a few catfish commercially "way back when"; purchased from local CO-OP, but it's been several years..... .
