I have a styled D which has been setting for several years and was not locked up. I have put a new wico mag from magneeders, new plug wires, plugs, new float in carb and had the carb rebuilt. It turns over, has great spark acts like it wants to take off but just does not. I am not sure what to check. I have on top of carb there are a couple of small little T type jet?? adjustments and not sure if I have them positioned proper?? Any help in getting this thing fired up would be greatly appreciated.

Jimmy, if you have the mag set so it sparks [snaps] as the LH impulse on the flywheel lines up with the case mark [at 3 o'clock directly behind & even in height with the center of the crankshaft] & the L/H plug sparks as that L/H impulse mark on the flywheel lines up then your mag is good & you have other problems..

~On the carb—Set the idle needle about 2 turns out from seated & the load needle about 1 turn out from seated [they should be marked on the carb casting for what they are]..

~If that tractor has been sitting a while the cylinder walls are probably washed clean of oil so start by adding about 2oz of engine oil through both spark plug holes. You could also do a once over cranking compression test but I’m sure you will find low compression.

~Once the oil is added, try cranking the engine over with the compression cocks closed. That will push the oil into the ring grooves & hopefully seal the rings for starting. Those old D’s have a habit of wearing the ring grooves in the pistons & that causes hard hand starting [see post to Michael Esch above].

~For hand starting that “D” try almost no throttle & full choke until fuel come out the petcocks, then open the choke & throttle a little & try again.

~I have found that in some cases on those “D” tractors [that have sat a while & not been started] won’t hand start with the petcocks open after sitting for long periods. Try cranking it with the petcocks closed [I know it isn’t easy but you DON’T have to turn it fast, just slowly turn it over].. If you can’t crank it with the petcocks closed then only open them slightly & try it.

~If it just won’t start by hand you might have to pull start it the first few times it runs.. Once it is running a few times it will then probably hand start good.

~If you haven’t already done so install NEW spark plugs & gap them at .035” instead of the recommended .030”..

~I guess here’s the bottom line—IF, you have a spark at the correct time & you have fuel coming out of the petcocks while cranking then it should start.. If it still won’t hand start you probably have ring sealing problems so try the oil in the cylinders & or pull starting it.

Any questions just post back or E-Mail..
