Have a 1945 B that had a knock when I bought it,(know better now!) Thought it was loose belt pully, flywheel etc. Finally pulled crankshaft cover and checked rod's. #2 was a little loose guessing 5-8 thousants, #1 was just flopping around crank. Not really, but VERY loose and felt eg shaped. Pulled cap and found babbet uneaven and mostly gone! Crank had babbet all over journel (sp).Removed all the shims xcept for the steel spacer and it's still loose. I have a spare crank and rod's so I can rebabbet ,mains,etc.etc. I would like to use it this summer, lite duty, skidding some logs and do a rebuild in winter! Can I pull back piston to remove wrist pin and replace rod ? Clean up crank putin another rod without tearing all down? Also I am a little worried as other rod is fine. How do the crank big ends receive oil? Just splash? I would hate to miss something and have it happen again..THANX John Sard

A guy came home quite the worse for wear. His wife was waiting for him with a broom. He said "Are you still cleaning or are you going somewhere"

That sure sounds like the plan alright, but in my experiance pulling a used piston pin in an awkward position like that might not be doable. Backup plan highly advised here.

They oil just like modern engines via drilled passage from the nearest main bearing which are also pressurized with oil from the oil pump. If you didn't feel/see the oil hole when you were in there, I'd start wondering how that could possibly be.

Lee: Thanks for input. Tractors are in Maine. Spare parts in Conn. I feel kind of foolish ! Should have know that! Was tired when I wrote original post, as it's 5-6 hrs to Daughters from home along Northeast corridor . Wall to wall semi's and vacationers. I could not see oil passage in bad crank as it was covered in lead. Looks like pluged passage or maybe a leaking supply line to flywheel side main or ?? Wanted to get this running to use in clearing some land for Daughter, also have a 1940 B "Slant dash" a real one (not an "A") that is "stuck". I really want to restore the 40. Haden't planned on doing 2 overhauls. Will give myself 40 lashes with wet noodle and go from there. THANX John Sard
