It appears I have a bad ignition switch on by 1953 Model 40 Johnd Deere and need to find a replacement. As a last resort, I will remove the old switch and take apart the sealed unit to see if it can be repaired. If anyone can guide me to a source for a replacement switch it would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks, Joe D.

I had to replace the switch on my 1953 model 50 about a year ago. Not sure where I got it, but I think Walts sells it for about $30. Its a multi-position switch with a resistor for the dim-headlight position. Perhaps you might be able to use it on your 40.

The positions are:
OFF
ON (no lights)
ON (all lights on bright)
ON (headlights bright, rear red)
ON (headlights dim, rear red)

Best of luck,
John

i bought a replacement switch for my '45 40 from the local Deere dealer. i don't remember the price, but i think it was less than the $68 someone mentioned for a 420.

I have repaired many of those switches, most are just dirty and need cleaned up sometimes the terminals need tightened up. Just carefully bend up the metal ears holding on the back, there is a spring inside so don't let it fly just lay the parts out in the order they come out clean them up I put some vaseline on them then put back in and push the ears back down. Really you have nothing to loose as it is no good now and everything to gain if it works again so go for it.

Check with your friendly John Deere Dealer. I bought an ignition switch for my '57 420S there.

It was about $68.00...ouch!
