Recently bought a 1020 three-cylinder gas from a dealer in North Dakoa. The owner for the past 10 years told me it was very hard to start when hot, like when it had been running the auger for a while. He said he thought it was typical of this model. Anybody else have such a problem? When I get it hauled back to Iowa I will likely have a pro rebuild the carburator and I'll put in new points, condenser and coil. Anything else I should do? It started right up when I tried it at the dealer. 1020 will make a nice companion for my spoiled-rotten Jubilee and 841 Fords. Cordially, Mike-Iowa

I had the same problem a couple of times after replacing the points, spark plugs, and cleaning the carb. I replaced the coil and have had no further problems.

I've got a 1966 1020 gasser and am pretty happy with it. Never had the hot no start problem with mine, sounds like a carb choke or float issue. In the tuneup department, be sure to change the hydraulic fluid and filter. There is also a tranny screen in the hydraulic system that gets forgotten, a lot. It's just behind the filter casing on the right side near the bottom. There should be an inverted 1/2 inch square drive nut around 1.5 inches in diameter and the screen which is about a foot long is behind it. The system needs to be drained before pulling it. Grab a JD owners manual and parts book off ebay, there are always a couple for sale there. Good luck with it.
