Anybody have any good tips for straightening a steering shaft on a 50? Just enough out of true that it rubs on the sheetmetal.

Jeff, it really depends on where it’s bent. If too close to the worm gear [manual steering] it will be hard to straighten..

~What I usually do is place the shaft in two “V” blocks, one on each end,, then spin the shaft while holding a China Marker near the shaft at the obvious point of run-out. That will mark the high point.. Then I place the shaft in the arbor press on the same “V” blocks with the marked area up,, then use the press to apply pressure to push the marked point on the shaft down.. Then I remove it from the press & spin it in the “V” blocks again to check it.. I have special cast “V” blocks but you make your own from hardwood or aluminum.. You could use a small bottle jack under the tractor chassis as a press also..

~You might want to look at how your hood is mounted.. On most I have seen with steering shaft contact to the hood the hood was mounted incorrectly on the front rubber mounts..
