3020 problems putting into gear when running

My 3020 just developed a problem when trying to select a gear. It has about 4500 hours on it and it seems like the clutch isn't totally disengaging when I try and select any gear. If I slow the rpm of the motor, I can get it in gear. The clutch doesn't seem to slip any and I went through the clutch adjustments and there were no changes in the symptoms.
Got any ideas? Is it really the clutch or could it be something else?

Hey Joe,
My 3020 is doing the same thing. I had it in to the shop the other day having a steering valve rebuilt and a lever on the side of the trans replaced and also a rod that goes to the shifter. I was thinking the wear in the lever and rod may have been what was causing my problems. From what everyone has told me the first choice is the syncronizers in the transmission that is the number one cause? I can see where a clutch adjustment might help but ?????
I changed out the entire shifter with one out of a 3010(gained a 3rd reverse) and it seemed to help some. They were supposed to adjust my shifter linkages but I'm not sure if they did or not? In any event its still doing it some but sometimes it works fine. Thats why I'm thinking its just an adjustment.

You may need a clutch . Before I'd pull it down however I would put it in high gear hold on the brakes run engine full throttle then let out on the clutch this should make it slip which sometimes can clean off rust and some oil causeing some sticking don't due this too long as you will overheat the clutch and warp the plates.

Although somewhat rare, I have seen this before. The drive splines on the clutch disc and transmission input shaft get some rust or grease/dirt buildup on them. This causes the disk to "stay in place" even when the clutch is released. Enough friction between the flywheel and the disk remains causing it to turn just as if the clutch were engaged.(This condition *RUST* usually follows long periods of storage in a damp area. The other condition *GREASE/DIRT* usually follows an overly greased throwout bearing.)

Also,(this is very rare) those same splines can get "sidewear" on them and "LOCK TOGETHER", preventing the disk from sliding away from the flywheel.

Have someone hold the clutch pedal down, engine off, and try to spin the clutch disk with a screwdriver. You should be able to.

GOOD LUCK AND KEEP US POSTED!
