I'm picking up a set of F&H HC125B round spoke rear wheels for my unstyled A this weekend. Will the correct tire size for these be 12.4 x 36? Also, I'm getting the F&H front wheels and thought they are supposed to be 5.50 x 16? Just wanted to make sure before I ordered the tires.

Thanks.

1951G,
The F&H HC125B rear wheels for the A had 6.00Sx36 "conventional" rims and used 9.00x36 tires. When using a wide-base tire, the recommended tire was 11-36, which became 12.4-36 in 1957.

However, some folks think that tire looks too wide for the rim (it does not sit flat), and I often see 9.5x36 tires used instead. You might consider looking at some examples of various tire widths on your wheels at tractor shows, and then decide what you like best.

The vertical height on the edge of the rim is higher on the old conventional rim than the wide-base rim, and some modern (wide-base) tires seem to accentuate this matter. I try to use BFGoodrich tires, as their tire design where it interfaces with the rim seems to fit better with the old conventional rims.

The HC127B front wheel uses a 5.50-16 tire, as you noted.

Duane,
Thanks for the information. I forgot to mention that I'm planning on pulling this tractor some. Would you still go with the 9.5x36 or 12.4x36 given this? Who sells the BFGoodrich, a local place said they carry ("Midas" <-- ?) which is an import. I didn't know if these are good tires.

1951G,
BFG may not make 12.4-36, at least in the 45 degree bar tread. I am familiar with Mitas tires as I picked up a pair of 12.4-36 for a neighbor from Wilson Tire in Ohio. They are sort of a 45 deg bar tread, but the bars are not straight. The bar gets thicker near the center.

If you are going to pull, you would have to go with the 12.4-36 for the traction.
