Last time I used my tractor the lift worked fine.
When I tried to use it recently, the lift would not work. I added fluid to no avail. The PTO works fine, but I cannot bushhog without the lift working.
Any suggestions short of taking it apart?

I had the same problem with my 46 M this year when mowing hay.I shortened the lift chain for the mower to keep it from hitting the driveshaft, that is what caused the problem. When the mower was dropped to cut it pushed the lift piston past the port in the valve body, blocking off any oil flow.I had to disassemble the unit to push the piston back past the port. The lift works fine,no monies spent just a few hours time.

Jim

I hope I am in left field here, but wonder about your post about the pto working fine but the lift don't. Basically those two components are not related.

Just a far out thought, you are not thinking that they are related and the oil is shared by both like the ole 2N I grew up on?

Jim, if you don't have a 2000 Lb. gage to check the pressure with, you can crack open the small line at the fitting on the unit under the seat, then spin the engine over. You should have a good squrit of oil. If not, something is wrong at the pump or lines. If you have good pressure from the pump, then likely the problem is in the lift unit. On those, I usually just go ahead and tear them down for a rebuild. I hone the cylinders, clean and inspect, and replace all (soft) parts. The parts for this is around $150 for a 40. I have not priced them for an M.
