I just got a used John Deere 1050 tractor and am having an over heating problem with it. The problem happens when I am using my rototiller attachment. I am only able to till about a 1/2 acre befor the temp light comes on. The tractor has about 1700 hrs on it. I am using biodiesel for fuel. the rototiller is a 72inch model. The cooling system seem to be fine, full radiator, fan belt tight, thermostat opens, air flow through the radiator seen fine. The tiller is set to dig 3inchs in depth. Any ideas what the problem may be?

A 72" tiller is a good pull on a 35hp tractor. What gear are you running? We have heavy soil and I can't pull more than 60" an not over load the tractor. May be all wet but just something to look at.

I am tilling in low low, also I did run some irregation sprinkers on the field before tilling to keep the dust down. The soil is dry and compacked I don't think it's worked for years. Today I put on a 60 inch flail mower and mowed for a couple of hours and the light never came on. I am starting to think the problem may be the biodiesel. According to the info I have about biodiesel there is about a 10% drop in H.P.compared to reg. diesel fuel. I will try reg fuel next and see what happens.

Not sure if it's possibly or likely in this situation, but I've seen water pump impellers and drive pulleys both slip on the shaft and cause hard-to-diagnose heating problems. Also make sure your air filter is good and clean, and you might want to install a mechanical gauge to make sure it's actually getting hot, as the switch/sensor could be faulty and turning the light on prematurely.

so if you install a mechanical guage, what temperature should it operate at?

G-man Thats a good idea about the temp gauge. at least it would clear up any doubt about the sensor.
