What are the main differences between the 3010 and 3020. Likewise the 4010 and 4020. I am shopping for one of these tractors and would like to have some idea what to look for. Thanks

User or a collector? As previously mentioned there are as many differences between and early and late 3020 as there are between a 3010 & an early 3020. It isn't going to cost you much more to get right into a much improved late 1980's/early 1990's 50 or 55 series tractor.

Hosepower difference not as great as it seems.The 10 series was rated at 540 pto speed and the 20 series was rated at 620 rpm but still a fairly significant difference in the field.The 10 series steered and braked a bit easier(also have a tendency of brakes to grab) than the 20 series due to design changes made to the 20 series.The seat tolerences loosened up on the 20 series but you would never notice that now.(trivia).Probably any 10 diesel series out there has been overhauled by now so they probably all have the 20 series sleeves and pistons.The 20 series had a speed advance injection pump that made starting easier but there again the most of the 10 series have been converted over by now also.Still they won't start quite as easy as the 20 series(don't retard timing as much) nor have as much power since the 10 series pump put out less fuel.(Unless they were turned up to 20 series specs)A little more hydraulic capacity on the 20 series as well as some other little improvements like moving the PTO lever to the right side for easier mounting and dismounting.A glare shield cast into the dash on the 20 series.20 series a little heavier built.Powershift transmission an option on the 20 series only. 1969 20 series had even more changes including that knee knocking side console. Could never understand that change.Deere paid BIG BIG bucks to that world recognized genius ,Henry Dreyfus(?) to design their tractor's operator's station back in the 50s and then messed up his design.He was also the one who you all can thank for those little symbols you now see instead of printed controls(tortise & hare--lighning bolt- that stupid oil can symbol etc,etc,etc.Getting us prepared for that mass migration from the South way back then,I guess.lol.

The knee knocking side console was to correct the problems with dash mounted lever[s] on the pre- 69 models. The ones with the expensive, impossible to lube,always stuck, expletive deleted control cables.

And Deere engineers told me it was because all the rest of the industry was going to the side console.Really there was only one cable and it wasn't that much of a deal to lubricate.But the side console did allow the SCVs to be moved to the rear and out of the engine heat and it did do away with that cable that did break occasionally if it wasn't lublicated.Never did like having to replace them either.It was that one poorly placed bolt on my 4320 that always got me in the kneecap that I really took offence with.lol,bob

the differential lock that was availabe on most 20 series,not on the 10 series.HMMMM,I wonder what else I forgot.Pencil style injectors on the 65 and up models.Throw away fuel filters-20 series.Cannister filters on the 10 series.

Skinny,little pto pin that can bend or break on 10 series that means that a split is needed.

Think he is refering to the shift rod that shifts the pto from 540 to 1000 rpm when the stub shaft is changed.That definitely WAS an improvement on the 20 series even it it is kind of a messy job to change shafts on the 20 series.
