Installing a head gasket

I'm getting ready to install the head gasket on my 35 A. After looking at the gasket, I noticed it's the same on both sides with the exception of the rings around the cylinders. On one side there is a seam and the other is smooth. Which side faces the head? I'm assuming the nuts on the head studs have only a lead washer behind them versus a lead washer with a regular cut washer. Also, I'm not soaking the head in oil but using copper coat on both sides. Is this the way to go? Thanks in advance.

1951G,
The smooth side of the head gasket goes toward the block, as noted earlier. The nuts only have the lead washers between them and the head. I use 2-3 light coats of copper coat on the head and block, waiting a minute or so between coats, then assemblying and torquing - with retorquing after the engine warms up. Others have noted in previous posts that applying the copper coat to the gasket causes a coating on the gasket to release (or so it appears).

Duane, what is copper coat? I'm just about ready to put my head gasket on my 49' "A"

Butch,
As I recall (I'm not in the shop now) both Permatex and K&W (and probably others) make a spray-on gasket sealer which contains copper to aid in heat conduction. Most any auto parts store will have some. What also works well is just regular aluminum paint - a couple of light coats will help seal the gasket, and aluminum is a good heat conductor. Assemble before the paint is dry.

1951G-
I placed the rolled lip toward the cylinder and the flat toward the head, but I'm not sure it matters.

I didn't soak the head gasket in oil but did put just a little "shallac" type coating on the gasket...and I'm not sure that matters either.

Just the lead washers goes under the nuts with no other washers.

So, I think you are on the right track, and should not have any trouble.

You should re-torque after it has been run a little.

Sorry, I meant to say "not soaking the head gasket in oil instead of head before installing".
