Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram for a 520? I am about to finish a restoration and wanted to take off an alternator that was installed years ago and replace it with a generator and vr like it came from the factory.
I'm having some problems with the electric system.

Thanks,

Jim Dunn

Jim, those 520's don't really have a specific Deere wire diagram.. The Deere furnished is pretty generic as it covers the 50, 60, 70, 520, 620 & 720 all in one wire print..

I have a more specific for the 520 so give me an E-Mail & I will send you the proper one..

That 520 electrical system is pretty basic but it came as a positive ground so your tractor was probably converted to negative ground when the alternator was installed.. Depending on what was changed when the alternator was installed the ammeter is now probably wired backwards as well as the ignition coil & possibly the fuel gage wired differently.. There might have been some extra wires added to the ignition circuit to excite the alternator & those will have to be removed when the generator is added.. You will also have to polarize the new generator when installed or you risk burning up the new regulator.. [I will send polarizing instructions with the wire print]..

Jim, send me an e mail to jmn50@msn.com and I can return e mail you a wirign diagram. About all you should have to do is connect the wire that did run to the Alternators main big output stud to the BAT terminal on the new Voltage Regulator and the VR wires to the Generator (FLD to gens Field post and ARM to Gens Armature post), then polarize her. Was the tractor converted over to Neg ground when the Alternator was connected, many are?? If so and if you go back to the original positive ground, you may have to reverse the ammeter leads. Let me know what ground you have now and which way you wanna rewire it and be sure the new VR is compatible for which ground you choose (I would take her bak to pos as original)
