I just bought a JD 420S slant steer. I have to shut the engine off to put the pto in gear and then restart the engine to run the bush hog. The pto clutch is obviously stuck, but what is the setup there and is there an easy fix to unstick it? Any help would be appreciated. The main drive clutch and transmission work fine. Thanks in advance. Joe

I engaged my mouth before I engaged the brain. My comments would only apply to a 5 speed with live pto.

Just been there and done that. Don't automatically assume that the pto clutch is stuck. I would agree if when you push the clutch in and at the half way point you feel the second stage clutch. If you can't feel it on the pedal, my guess is that it is not disengaging at all. Now we are talking about splitting it.

The two stage spicer clutch is apparently something that can't readily be shade treed in and assume it will work. On my tractor, (58 slant steer) the clutch would work for the tractor but I could only get it to adjust up to 3 1/2 inches of free travel. The pto clutch just did not attempt to disengage when the pedal was pushed all the way down.

When I took it apart and after studying the book, I found that there are adjustments for the main clutch levers that contact the throughout bearing and also for the second stage part of the clutch. When I took mine apart you could still see the numbers on the small disk. It had never worked since someone slapped the tractor back together. I did not think the mechanics of adjusting were that difficult but you sill have to make a special tool to set up the main clutch levers. Also the book says to use a new clutch disk to do the set up even if you are going to put the used one back in. I did the initial set up with the used one since i did not have a new one to "borrow". Oops it had to come apart again. If I recall I added .050 to the distance of the main clutch lever settings and it came out right on the money.

I sure hope I am wrong on the computer diagnosis and someone helps you get the PTO disk unstuck.

Thanks for the reply Henry J. I can't feel the pto clutch pressure come onto the pedal when the pedal is partially depressed. It never occurred to me that it may have never been disengaging at all. Somebody probably had it apart and reassembled it and it probably has never worked right since? The guy I bought it from used it the way it is for 2 years and didn't know any different. He thought it was normal that you had to turn off the engine to engage the pto. Sounds like a project. Maybe it has a new pto disc in it that has never been slipped. We'll find out this winter. Thanks for the information. Best regards. Joe

Hey Henry J. I was wondering where you are at on the 420? You have told the man right, those (live PTO) dual clutch systems are a bugger to get right. No way without the service manual, even then, I have just give up and bought a new pressure plate already adjusted. Then it may not last long under hard use. I had just about rather have one without the (live) then you can use an aftermarket override clutch on the shaft with no problems..He..He..
