Ijust got my first John Deere that i"ve wanted for a long time. It"s a 60 that is a pretty decent machine. It runs nice but the engine seems to speed up going down hill. I know its governor related but what should i check for. another thing is that it runs better with the choke out a little. any comments? I just ordered books. thank you i always enjoy this board.

It"s a two cylinder trait to have all the engine hold back on a hill that bicycle brakes would have stopping a train.

The governor will not hold you back on a hill. Once the engine reaches high idle speed going down hill, the governor has done it"s job if the throttle plate in the carb is closed at that point. Gravity and the weight of the tractor will continue to accelerate the tractor and the engine rpm will continue to rise unless you apply the brakes to prevent that from happening (highly recommended!)

Good explaination Carl. in reply to Carl, 08-17-2004 11:52:18
To let the engine run wild can cause parts the govenor weights to be thrown off on some models.
