so i am told by JD dealer.. the 5420 is too big for small yard work and to small for realy large farms,,,, and they recommend a 5420. I already plan to go wiht clutch model,, so i dont roll down hills too fast when compared to hydrostat trans,,,, I have about 20 acres in wooded land that needs to have downed trees dragged out. stump holes filled in, mulch piles made and moved, several trails cleared, other major lawn dirt work. the area is slighty hill - nothing to major... and i can later cut about 20 acres which are in hay. i plan to keep this tractor long term. does the 5420 sound right? i do know,, that i dont wanna mess with small diameter fwd front tires. thanks to all of u great americans. P.S. you viet Nam vets,,, thank u for your service,,, and welcome home.

Sounds like the 5420 could be about right for you. Of course, dragging logs around can use up all the tractor you have, regardless of HP, depending on how big the stumps are. To my knowledge, there is no hydrostatic transmission available on the 5420 and even if there were, it wouldn't freewheel down slopes as you seem to suspect it would. I'd suggest the synchronized transmission, or better yet the synchronized reverser transmission if it's available.
