Hi all,

I agreed to help a friend repair his Grandfather's 1939 JD B. We are trying to keep the B as originial as possible. The questions I have are: what size are the original front tires? The tractor presently has two 15" car tires on the front.. I think the tractor came equipped with 16" front wheels. When I was replacing one of the rear tires I noticed that one of the rear axles moved back and forth in the rear axle housing. Anyone know the procedure for removing a rear axle and what type of outer bearing/bushing did JD use?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Steve, the early B's up till SN 201000 had 5.00X15 fronts on them After that they came with 5.50X16 fronts. As for the loose rear axle, could be either a bad bearing, or just need to have the preload set up. Its real self explainatory once you get in there. Good Luck Don

Ok, Steve I am not sure on the tire size, but as far as repairing the slack on the rear axle, you have to take the rear cover, or power trol assy. Inside there are two main bull gears and a castle nut that holds the axel. The axle has a ring casted on it where it goes into the housing to keep it from going in to far. There will be a metal dust ring witch holds the oil felt seal. Thanks, Brian Nielsen

Those early B's up until ser# 201000 used 15" frt. wheels. The rear axles are on tapered roller bearings. You can tighten them up or remove them if you want to if you pull off the back cover, you may have a hyd. unit with pto or just pto only. The inside end of the axles are threaded and have castle nuts on them.Just tighten them up more to remove play,or loosen them up and drive a wedge between them to remove and replace the oil seal inside.Remove any screws on the outside felt retainers first if yours has them.
